As well as significant upgrades to local sporting infrastructure, the initiative forges an alliance between the State Government and elite sports to bring more major events to Gippsland.

Each stage of the race will be streamed live and include a TV highlights package, to be broadcast after the event on the Nine Network.

Race Director John Trevorrow  said “We are proud to be able to keep this crucial event in the Subaru National Road Series calendar and to race in the main towns of Gippsland. This beautiful region holds a special place in my heart as I grew up training and racing on these roads.”

“The course this year may be different, but I know the quality of racing will not disappoint. With top-class fields in both the men’s and women’s events, I am expecting two entertaining bike races that will produce very worthy winners.”

MINE – The Film Will Always Be With You

This is an exhibition of video works by a selection of South African artists, based both in South Africa and across European capitals. MINE was last shown at TATE Modern, London. MINE is both the title of the exhibition as well as the film produced by William Kentridge in 1991. This seminal animated video evokes images of deep level mining in South Africa and refers to the unprecedented exploitation of land and people under colonialism and the subsequent apartheid system.

The title refers not only to the idea of deep level mining, but to the idea of personal ownership and questions of identity. The works featured have been chosen for their diversity, with the common denominator that the artists make reference to themselves in their work, either in person, as actor, model, observer, interviewer or instigator. MINE seeks to explore the myriad ways in which we identify and position our ‘selves’.

Morwell to Traralgon Shared Pathway

Latrobe City Council’s contractors have begun construction of the first stage of the Morwell to Traralgon shared pathway.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the $4.5 million project would eventually see the path link the two towns to improve connectivity and liveability.

“The community has been talking about this pathway for years and we’re pleased the project is underway. Stage one will be the construction of the 2.5 metre wide path from the Morwell Railway Station to McDonald Street in Morwell. The works for this phase are expected to take around six weeks.

“The section from McDonald Street to Kernot Hall will start in November and the further stages of the project, from Waterhole Creek to Alexanders Road to Old Melbourne Road and finally, to Coonoc Road, Traralgon will take place next year. The path, which is around ten kilometres long, is expected to be completed in June 2018,” Cr O’Callaghan said.

“Provision of a shared pathway that allows people to ride their bicycles or to walk or jog between two of the city’s major towns is not only about the physical link, it’s about encouraging exercise and promoting healthier lifestyles,” Cr O’Callaghan concluded.

Funding for this project is being provided by the Federal government ($1.6 million) and Victorian governments Safe System Road Infrastructure Program ($2.95 million).

Hazelwood Power Station nominated for heritage protection.

Latrobe City Council has criticised the push for the Heritage Council of Victoria to consider Hazelwood Power Station’s nomination for heritage protection.

It is in the process of being decommissioned in preparation for the mine site’s transformation into a lake.

But Moe resident Cheryl Wragg wants the ageing plant to form part of a Latrobe Valley industrial history trail.
